Tuesday 21 November: Visit to Brixton Village Market

16 artists made their way from Brixton Underground Station to the innermost recesses of Brixton Market and into the colourful arcades known as Brixton Village.   Accordingly, we mostly majored on colour, particularly yellows, although one person achieved a noir interpretation.   Several artists escaped outside and picked out some of the interesting architectural features.   The day was on the chilly side, but there are definitely enough interesting external views to justify a visit in warmer weather.

Luckily for us, Brixton Village was not particularly busy, which suited our sketching, and we were also able to get a table for lunch together, where we enjoyed varying types of Eastern Street Food (I think!).

Our next meet up will be in January, but meanwhile we await the images from our orchestral sketching day  which will follow shortly.

So here is Brixton Market:

Invitation for a Private View for our exhibition at Highbury Roundhouse

Image above from Daniel Lloyd-Morgan

We have arranged for a Private View of our Art in the Park exhibition at Highbury Roundhouse.

This should be a fun evening with a chance to meet the exhibiting artists and friends.

This is on the evening of Thursday 30th November from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Roundhouse cafe where the pictures are hung.

Highbury Roundhouse, 71 Ronalds Road, London N5 1XB.

The nearest stations are Highbury and Islington and Drayton Park. There are also buses going along Holloway Road and Blackstock Road. It is possible to park in the neighbouring roads after 6:30pm. The best route by car is from Holloway Road turning into Fieldway Crescent and then navigate up to Ronalds Road. It might be possible for anyone with mobility issues to park adjacent to the venue. Contact me, Janet Payne 07815 772857 if you need to park closer to the venue.

The cafe will be serving refreshments and wine, and as we are not paying for the use of the space please don't hold back on buying a few refreshments!! The exhibition space is courtesy of the Roundhouse, which does need to make ends meet.

Exhibiting Artists are Sue Lees, Christine Khwaja, Audrey Rapier, Janet Payne, Daniel Lloyd-Morgan, Home Phoenix Wong, Priscilla Worley, Chris Baker.

Please do come and bring a friend (or two!)

An idea of numbers would be helpful, email janetat48ock@hotmail.com

Return Visit to the Haydn Chamber Orchestra Saturday November 25th at 2:30

We have the opportunity for a return visit to the Haydn Chamber Orchestra, where we went in April. This is an extra to our usual programme and is on a Saturday.

Many thanks to Alison Glaister for arranging this with the orchestra.

Meet at 2:30 pm on Saturday 25th November at Christchurch Highbury, 155 Highbury Grove N5 1SA. Nearest tubes are Finsbury Park and Highbury or even Arsenal. Plenty of buses on Blackstock Road. Enter the church from the clocktower side. The rehearsal lasts until 5:30pm. There is a tea break.

This is the Haydn Chamber Orchestra's rehearsal for their evening concert which will feature Mozart's  Don Giovanni Overture, Shostakovich's Cello Concerto and Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. The rehearsal is free, but if you want to stay for the evening performance you can buy a ticket.

Last time we all enjoyed ourselves and there was an amazing invited soloist.

Please try and be there on time so as not to disturb the rehearsal.

Brixton Market

Meet at 11 am on Tuesday 21 November 2023 outside Brixton Underground station for an outing to Brixton Market, which has reinvented itself as Brixton Village. It is a lively and diverse venue full of small stalls selling exciting merchandise. Not the usual High Street chains.

The market itself is under cover so will be rain proof and a bit warmer than outside! There are plenty of eateries and coffee shops. Bring a sketching stool and a warm jacket.

The market is very old established and Electric Avenue is the adjacent street with its coloured Victorian arches and canopies.

We last visited in April 2019 pre-Covid. Below is a Sue Lees' pic from that outing.
