Haydn Chamber Orchestra Saturday 27 January 2024

We have another chance to sketch the Haydn Chamber Orchestra. They are in rehearsal at St Michael's Highgate on Saturday 27 January from 2:30 to 5:30.

This is not the same venue as we went to previously.

The address is St Michael's, South Grove, Highgate N6 6BJ and the programme is:

Schumann   Piano Concerto,  

Brahms    Symphony No 3,  Wagner   Siegfried, 

Rhine Journey from Gotterdammerung.

The conductor is Paul Davies and the soloist for the piano concerto is Charles Owens. It is a charity concert and the actual performance follows in the evening.

There is also another rehearsal for the same programme the previous day, Friday 26 January 7-10 at St Andrew's, Thornhill Square, N1 which you are also welcome to attend.

Some sketchers have sold their work to the orchestra. If you want to do this, the advice is to have one identifiable player per sheet. We will try and have a throw down in the interval but this may not be possible.

St Bartholomew the Great Tuesday 16th January 2023

 Our next outing is to St Bartholomew the Great on Tuesday 16 January. Meet at the entrance at 11 am, or catch up with us inside the Church.

Barts are expecting us and are relaxed about visiting artists. There is no charge for entrance, but Barts would appreciate a donation as the Church is expensive to keep up.

Barts was founded in 1123 as a Priory by Prior Rahere. It is now the oldest parish church in London and has a Norman interior and some interesting artworks including a Damien Hirst gold statue. The music in the services is very good indeed. Their website is greatstbarts.com and Wikipedia gives a fairly good account of the building.

The address is West Smithfield, Barbican, EC1A 9DS. The entrance is from Smithfield through a Tudor arch with a little building above, or from the churchyard. The nearest underground is Barbican and there are buses going along Goswell Road.

There are loos in the Church and cafes around Smithfield. 

We have visited Barts at least twice before and enjoyed the visit. Unfortunately I don't have any pics. The last visit was several years ago, in pre Covid.

Haydn Chamber Orchestra

On a very cold Saturday over a dozen artists made their way to Christchurch Highbury where the Haydn Orchestra were rehearsing for their evening performance. This was a really exciting opportunity to draw musicians performing, so thank you Haydn Orchestra and also Alison Glaister for facilitating. A challenging but fun afternoon.

Unfortunately the heating in the Church hadn't been turned on but the cup of hot tea in the interval was really welcome. We do hope the heating was turned on for the evening performance.

The PV for the Art in the Park exhibition at Highbury Roundhouse was a jolly occasion, and Sue Lees sold a picture. Unfortunately I didn't take any photos of the occasion but if any one else did and can send them to me, janetat48ock@hotmail.com, I will post them on this blog.

Tuesday 21 November: Visit to Brixton Village Market

16 artists made their way from Brixton Underground Station to the innermost recesses of Brixton Market and into the colourful arcades known as Brixton Village.   Accordingly, we mostly majored on colour, particularly yellows, although one person achieved a noir interpretation.   Several artists escaped outside and picked out some of the interesting architectural features.   The day was on the chilly side, but there are definitely enough interesting external views to justify a visit in warmer weather.

Luckily for us, Brixton Village was not particularly busy, which suited our sketching, and we were also able to get a table for lunch together, where we enjoyed varying types of Eastern Street Food (I think!). 

Our next meet up will be in January, but meanwhile we await the images from our orchestral sketching day  which will follow shortly.
